Healthcare in hospitals is provided in outpatient and hospital units. Larger hospitals nowadays employ more that 1000 medical workers, who yearly provide healthcare to more than 10.000 hospitalised patients and perform a few 100.000 outpatient treatments in special clinics. Beside basic secondary hospital activities such as surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, there are usually also other independent wards (laboratories, central intensive care, radiological diagnostics, central pharmacy, transfusiology, dialysis centre).

BIRPIS21 is an integrated Clinical Information System: it contains all modules necessary for the efficient functioning of the entire hospital, such as the modules for:

• microbiological laboratories (MBL),
• pharmacies (LIRPIS21),
• accounting and invoicing (RAF),
• up-to-date data analysis (K21) and
• integration with other systems (e.g. Laboratory Information System L@b-IS).

It covers all administrative functions as well as high-technology medical and paramedical functions and creation of Electronic Health Record (EHR).
